Student PPT presentations of 2 human created forms DUE: WK #13

Using Stokstad's introduction "Starter Kit" in our text, we have become familiar with how to deconstruct and analyze any piece of visual work, whether ancient or made yesterday.

As we work patiently and mindfully as a group during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have transferred all course materials to remote settings.

I have altered this assignment slightly, so that each of you are SUCCESSFUL!

In this assignment you have an opportunity to put your cognitive skills together and demonstrate the knowledge you have gleaned throughout our semester together!

Each student will create a PPT presentation that will be loaded onto our class Blog to share with their colleagues.

Follow the procedures below. Read carefully so you know exactly what to do.

Student presentations will be DUE
WK 13
THU APR 23 @ 6 PM
And, by all means, you may submit earlier if you wish!

Student PPT Presentations  - plan on 6 slides

In your presentations, you will create a comparative analysis between two forms.

  • One will be taken from our Stokstad text from ONLY Chapters 1 through 16.
  • The second will be a humanly created image/object that has been found by you.
  • This can mean, it can be from in your home, off your t-shirt, a tattoo, on the internet, from a book, etc., etc., etc.
  • Be inventive - Be creative!

There are 2 rules for your found image/object:
1. It must have been made by a human being
2. It must have been created within the last century, thus from 1920 - 2020
3. It must be thematically/subject matter similar,
i.e. a chair must be compared to another chair
**Which means that one can be an actual chair, and the second can be a chair found in a painting.
4. You must be able to produce an image of it
5. The comparison you make MUST NOT be the same as the examples below

The images below will give you loads of ideas...

Above, one inventive student found a clay sculptural head of a Inca ruler in our text, and compared it to the Weeknd's coifed hair.

Imaginative, and indeed, humorous!

Here, you see, the student is comparing the Mexican cultural artifact to a photographic image. Thus comparing a 3D form to a 2D form, back to a 3D form, because the Weeknd LIVES! And yes, I am thankful for his music!
This is similar to the Woman of Willendorf to The Thing from Marvel Comics.
And yes, the Weeknd's hair style has been coifed by him or one of his stylists!!

Process
Part ONE
1. Select one image from our text we have never seen in my lecture notes from our text from Chapter 1 through Chapter 16.

2. Your second image is to be found from the world of images made in the last century, between 1919 - 2020

Part TWO

SLIDE 1
Create ONE slide with BOTH images on it.
Place SP 2020 .  FA 111.01 and your name on the slide.

Put the first art history slide from our text on the LEFT and include Chapter # and page number.
Put your comparative image on the RIGHT.
Put ALL details on both images on the slide including:

Title -- needs to be in italics
Artist/Designer
Time period. BCE or CE
Height in inches (convert any metric measurements)
Material
Collection the object belongs

From your research, BEFORE ORGANIZING your PPT, target the following:
4 of the predominant formal elements and principles of design that are evident in each example.

SLIDE 2
Describe the first dominant formal element / principle of design found in both forms.
How does this element/principle function in both images/objects?
In other words, what is IT DOING, how is it operating in the overall composition?
How do your selected images/objects compare?

SLIDE 3
Describe the second dominant formal element / principle of design found in both forms.
How does this element/principle function in both images/objects?
In other words, what is IT DOING, how is it operating in the overall composition?

How do your selected images/objects compare?

SLIDE 4
Describe the third dominant formal element / principle of design found in both forms.
How does this element/principle function in both images/objects?
In other words, what is IT DOING, how is it operating in the overall composition?

How do your selected images/objects compare?

SLIDE 5
Describe the fourth dominant formal element / principle of design found in both forms.
How does this element/principle function in both images/objects?
In other words, what is IT DOING, how is it operating in the overall composition?

How do your selected images/objects compare?

SLIDE 6
This slide needs to include a short summary between the two forms
AND, a WORKS CITED page

ELEMENTS of DESIGN
Line
Shape
Color
Volume and mass
Space
Texture
Value

PRINCIPLES of DESIGN
Unity - Variety / harmony
